The Monarch Migration: A Sanctuary Day Trip to Michoacán

February 16th - 7:00 am

Meeting spot: Real de Minas San Miguel de Allende
$3,950 MXN per person
*Minimum: 6 participants
POSSIBLE GROUP:
Monday, February 16th
  • 7:00 am (5 more people needed to reach the minimum)

Step into the pine-and-oyamel forests of Michoacán and witness one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles: the monarch butterfly wintering grounds. This full-day experience includes round-trip transportation and the a bilingual expert guide, with scenic stops along the way. At the sanctuary, you can choose to reach the butterflies either by hike or horseback, then enjoy time to observe and take photos in the reserve. On the return, we’ll pause at a traditional local kitchen area for a taste of regional flavors and a chance to browse handcrafted souvenirs. Weather varies seasonally, so clear, sunny days offer the best viewing conditions

Estimated travel time to reach the El Rosario Sanctuary is approximately 3.5 hours each way, with restroom stops along the road.

Once at the sanctuary, you may choose between:

  • Hiking: approximately 1.5 hours uphill + 1.5 hours downhill (around 3 hours total), an estimated 3 km.

  • Horse: approximately 20–30 minutes each way on horseback, followed by a short 10-minute walk upon arrival (and the same on the return).

Your estimated time inside the sanctuary is 30–45 minutes.

On the way back, we will stop at a local area with traditional kitchens (rice, mole, chicken soup, etc.) and souvenir stands. You will have a few minutes to explore independently.

Important note regarding weather: If the weather conditions are not favorable (fog, rain, or very cold temperatures), the butterflies may not fly and visibility can be limited. Sunny days generally provide the best experience and viewing conditions.

Includes:

  • Round-trip private transportation to the sanctuary in a Suburban

  • Bilingual expert tour guide for the day

  • Horse fee + tip for the horse handler (if choosing the horse option)

  • Public restroom access during the road stops

We highly recommend taking this tour during the first days of your stay—it’s the perfect way to get to know the city and make the most of your time here.

We will begin with a visit to the emblematic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the parish church that has become the city’s most recognized symbol. Learn the fascinating story of its self-taught architect, Zeferino Gutiérrez, and the inspiration behind its unique design.

Next, we will explore the House of Ignacio Allende, home of one of Mexico’s most important independence heroes, followed by a visit to the Temple of the Immaculate Conception and its former cloister, now home to Bellas Artes, the city’s renowned fine arts school. Here, we will admire the unfinished mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros, one of Mexico’s three great muralists, and enjoy rotating exhibitions of contemporary art by both local and international artists.

Our tour continues with a stop at the historic Angela Peralta Theater, the Plaza de la Soledad, and the Paso del Camino Real, a key route of colonial trade and travel. We will also visit the Franciscan Monastic Complex, where we’ll learn about the early missionaries and their lasting influence on the region. Step outside the city and into the heart of rural life with this unforgettable experience in the main canyon region, located just 30 minutes southwest of San Miguel de Allende. This immersive excursion invites you to connect with a local ranching community and explore the breathtaking natural beauty of the area.

Your visit begins with a warm welcome from the family at the ranch, where you’ll witness and even participate in the morning milking of the cows, an essential daily ritual in the preparation of their fresh, handmade cheese. This cheese will later be part of a traditional lunch lovingly prepared just for you.

After a brief and horseback riding lesson, we will begin a two-hour ride through the stunning canyon landscapes, guided by members of the host family who will proudly share the history of the land and their connection to it. As we ride along the riverbed and through the canyon, you may have the chance to cross the river, spot local flora and fauna, and even search for geodes, hidden treasures of this ancient landscape. The journey concludes with a delicious ranch-style meal featuring regional flavors: handmade enchiladas with fresh cheese, cactus fruit pico de gallo made with xoconostle, beans, salsas, and refreshing fruit-infused water.

Begin your journey with a visit to the Santuario de Atotonilco, often referred to as “Mexico’s Sistine Chapel.” Built in the 18th century and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, this Baroque sanctuary is adorned with intricate frescoes, richly painted murals, and devotional artworks that reflect the profound spiritual and cultural traditions of the region.

Your expert guide will share the fascinating history and significance of this sacred site, which continues to serve as an active pilgrimage destination. Just as it did centuries ago, spiritual retreats and religious gatherings are still held here today, preserving its role as a living place of worship and reflection.

Next, we will visit the nearby Galería Atotonilco, considered one of the premier destinations for Mexican folk art in the entire country and consistently ranked as TripAdvisor’s #1 attraction in the San Miguel area.

Folk art is the beating heart of Mexico’s cultural identity, with each piece reflecting the heritage of a particular village or region, passed down through generations. The gallery’s owners travel throughout Mexico to curate a remarkable collection that includes ceramics, hand-carved wooden figures, papier-mâché, woven baskets, textiles and more. Every item supports artisans and their communities, helping preserve ancient traditions that might otherwise be lost.

The gallery itself is housed in a modern architectural gem, featured in design magazines around the world—making the visit both culturally and visually inspiring.
